A technology entrepreneur with the scars and instincts that come from having lived the founder journey himself. Ben has founded, grown and exited multiple companies, including Run The Red, acquired by Pushpay (NZX: PPH), where he stayed on as CEO through its international expansion and NZX/ASX listing. He's since co-founded ventures in AI compliance and is currently Director of Enterprise Sales at TEAM Cloud, bringing hyper-scale sovereign cloud and AI to New Zealand. At Alcyone, he brings that same instinct for winning complex enterprise deals and building something from the ground up.
25 years across energy, resources and technology, with time in Crown, corporate and private-capital roles, so Josh sees a transaction from the regulator's side and the financier's side. He's also backed his own ventures with his own money on the line. Alcyone (pronounced Al-cy-o-ne) is the brightest star in a cluster that's guided, marked time for, and been named by nearly every culture that has existed.
Alcyone is the brightest of the Pleiades (pronounced Plee-uh-deez), a tight cluster of young, hot stars around 440 light-years away, visible to the naked eye as a small, hazy huddle of light. In Greek myth she's one of the seven daughters of Atlas, which is where the cluster gets its more familiar name: the Seven Sisters.
Long before telescopes, the Pleiades were a working part of daily life. Bronze Age farmers timed planting and harvest by them. Aboriginal Australian songlines carry stories of the sisters. In Sumerian, the Pleiades were called MUL.MUL, meaning "Star of Stars" or star cluster, and were highly revered as the first stars in their ecliptic. Aztec and Māori calendars alike used their rising to mark the turn of the year.
In New Zealand the cluster is known as Matariki, and its midwinter rising marks the Māori new year, a time for remembering those who've passed, gathering with whānau, and looking ahead to what's next. Matariki became a national public holiday in 2022, the first uniquely Aotearoa holiday of its kind.
